HOW TO EAT GUAVA
(Esmeralda Santiago)
Esmeralda Santiago is an important writer, she was born in San Juan, Puerto
Rican, and moved to the mainland United State when she was 13 years old, she wrote
and published many novels , two of her novels,” when I was Puerto Rican” and “Almost a woman” are based on the author’s
experiences. Esmeralda Santiago continues to write today, her books are very popular
in high school students and adults. She studied in Harvard University dance and
drama.
The novel “HOW TO EAT GUAVA” describes the
color, the taste, the fragrance and the texture of a guava, so it is based in
the yearning when she lived in Puerto Rico, the literary movements present in
this novel are post-modernist and post- colony in these movements, the author
explains her thinkings and reflections the prejudices of her life.
On the other hand, there are the literary focus, the style, the tone and the background, they are the manners that the author used for explaining and loving the reader, in order to conclude, the literary
figure presents a metaphor for example: “I pick one the size of a tennis ball.”
